Does It Really Matter How You Phrase A Research Question?

Is it better to ask if someone likes a coat or how they feel when they wear it?
Is it better to ask why someone bought a coat or why didn't they buy a sweater?

Different questions are useful in different circumstances, but some yield much more valuable insights than others. In this week's article below, I go over five different question types and how you can use them in your interviews:

1. Opinion based questions
2. Memory based questions
3. Evidence based questions
4. Emotion based questions
5. Trade off questions

The Results of Last Week’s Poll

The question: How would you describe your decision-making process?

What do you do when your Likert scale gives you pretty even answers across the board? 😃

Most people (23.5%) say that their decisions are mostly emotional driven but the second biggest cohort was that their decisions are completely logical at 20.1%. The challenge is that a lot of our decisions involve trade-offs where there is not a single clear answer. The world is messy and filled with nuance. Our brains need a way to break the stalemate and research suggests that emotions play this role. Logic often gets us close and emotion makes the final call.

In fairness, one person did comment that I did not cite my sources so I’m just going to leave this study here: https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/8941953/. My final question is that if you decide to read the link was that a logical or emotional decision?
