Cross-Functional #193: How do you pitch process improvements?

Why transformations go wrong, decision-making at scale, a jobs-to-be-done case study and rotating pairs daily.

The Main Thing: How do you pitch process improvements?

In last week's poll, we asked how you address issues that are outside of the team's direct control and pitching either leadership or your peers on the improvements were the two most common answers.

But how do you pitch the improvement? Are you suggesting solutions or just raising the problem? Do you focus on how it will improve things for the team? Do you focus on how it will improve things for the company?

I know how I would like to answer this question but it's not actually how I've pitched improvements in the past. Try to think of the last improvement you pitched and answer how you pitched it rather than how you would like to have it.

How did you pitch the last improvement?

When you raise the problem how do you pitch for fixing it?

The Results of Last Week’s Poll

The question was: How do you manage issues that require changes outside the team?

We had another close one. And as Zita commented “I do the first three at the same time. Status quo is hard to change otherwise.”

Pitching either leadership or peers (to build a coalition) on the benefits were the clear winners. This week we're going to dig into how people pitch their improvements. And next week we will dig into how people use a way of working vision to prioritise their improvement initiatives.
