Cross-Functional #202: Funding And Governing Empowered Teams

Org Design, CPO burnout, the UX Jobs crisis and the frontend treadmill.

Funding And Governing Empowered Teams

Long-lived, empowered teams are expensive. Instead of having a business case that has clear costs and benefits, long-lived teams require companies to place a lot of trust in these teams.

We need to create a business case to justify the expense. Costs are easy to calculate but we can’t specify exactly what the teams will build. Instead we need to define clear metrics for each team and then track them on delivery of those metrics (with a little complication around when teams are first set up.

I go into more detail in this weeks article on Funding and Governing Empowered Teams below.

The Results of Last Week’s Poll

The question was: Do you have visibility of the end-to-end business process for the product you are working on?

40% of people work in teams that deliver outputs, with an additional 24% working where Product and Design deliver outcomes but then handover to Dev teams to deliver the outputs.

Just 19% of people work in teams that are responsible for outcomes.

The unfortunate truth of product development is that 90% of features fail to deliver the expected business value. I think over time we will see those numbers change. In the meantime, we’ll keep trying to fight the good fight 😀
